Advancing Your Skills

Getting your driving licence is just the start of your journey as a driver. To pass the test you will have learned the skills to drive safely, however the more you drive, the more competent you will become. The best drivers are those who understand that there is always more to learn, and that doesn’t mean just spending hours behind the wheel.

There are various driving courses available that will teach you advanced skills to make you a better, safer and more confident driver. There are other benefits too – some qualifications are recognised by insurance providers who apply discounts for drivers who hold them.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a practical training course that takes at least 6 hours and is for drivers to improve their skills and drive more safely. It can be taken at any time although it should be most useful to new drivers in the year after passing their test.

The course is designed to help improve the following skills:

‣ Town driving
‣ All weather driving
‣ Driving on rural roads
‣ Driving at night
‣ Driving on dual carriageways
‣ Motorway driving

The training will take at least six hours, although it can take longer if your instructor thinks it’s necessary. You won’t have to take a test at the end of the course: you’ll be assessed during the modules

You’ll need a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor (ADI) to teach you. Enter your postcode below to search our Driving Instructor Directory for local Instructors who offer Pass Plus training.

Institute of Advanced Motorists – Advanced Driver Course

In the 60 years since IAM was founded, half a million people have qualified as advanced drivers on their flagship Advanced Driver Course – the only one accredited by the DVSA. With a commitment of three to six months to complete the comprehensive course and some practice, you could add your name to the list, and enhance your driving skills.

An Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) qualified expert will take you through a number of observed drives in your own car. Each session with your expert lasts a couple of hours and you’ll focus on specific skills to develop across a wide range of competencies, where you’ll need to demonstrate your newly acquired advanced driving skills such as, control, observation, timing, optimum road positioning, ability to deal with unpredictable roads and other road users’ behaviour. When you’re ready, you’ll take the advanced driving test.

As well as gaining recognition for your skills, once you’re qualified you’ll become a full IAM member and you can often receive insurance benefits as a result – around 90% of their members do. You’ll also feel more confident and safer on the road and if you drive for a living an Advanced Driver qualification can add Brownie points to your CV.
